Membership in the local Union gives you a voice. Only members are allowed to participate in contract negotiations, vote on Collective Bargaining Agreements, elect the local union leadership, and serve as a union steward or a union officer. There are also several programs sponsored by the IATSE that only members have access to. Many people complain about legitimate problems we face as local freelancers. Membership gives you the chance to do something about it. We encourage all freelancers to let your voice be heard by becoming a member of Local 748.
If you want to become a member of IATSE 748, you must fill out a membership application and submit a resume to the Business Agent. Your application and qualifications will be evaluated by the local membership and, upon approval, you will be added to the Arizona Referral List and given contact information for all our local employers.
The initial cost of union membership is $300. This includes the International application fee and the Local initiation fee. You can request an application through our Contact Form. Upon completion, please send the completed forms and appropriate payment to:
IATSE Local 748
P.O. Box 1191
Phoenix, AZ 85001
Once we receive your application, we will review it, submit it to membership for approval and then forward it to the IATSE International offices. They will again review and either accept or deny your membership. Either way, you will be notified of the status of your application. If accepted, you will receive a Union card and quarterly stamp.
Once your membership is approved, your ongoing financial obligations to IATSE Local 748 will be $20 over the IATSE stamp cost (as of 2020 - $57 for a total of $77) per quarter. You are also required to pay the 1.75% Arizona Referral List fee on all gross earnings done under a CBA. You will be issued a new IATSE stamp for each quarter which you are current. Quarterly due dates are January 1, April 1, July 1 and October 1. The $20 additional helps pay local administrative fees as well as IATSE District 2 fees.
It is important to note that you do not have to be a union member to work under the contract. Contracted employers have agreed to give preference in hiring practices to those referred by IATSE Local 748, but the referral process is completely separate from IATSE Union membership. All employees receive equal benefits under the contract, regardless of their membership status with IATSE Local 748.
